Track Of The Month April ‘Electric Counterpoint: III. Fast’

1st April, 2010

Have you ever heard of…

…Steve Reich, the composer? Why, of course you have! Well, for some reason unknown to us, we have been experiencing an inexplicable urge to make an edit of one of his tracks, called Electric Counterpoint: III. Fast.

We wanted to make our own version of this beautiful piece of music, adding beats and bass, and at the same time stay 100% true to the original arrangement. However, for our needs, we respectfully (although some might say cheekily) altered the whole song from a 3/4 to a 4/4 time signature. Not unlike how The Orb did it in their 90’s classic Little Fluffy Clouds. Actually, editing and experimenting with this piece of music turned out to be great fun!

So much fun, in fact, that we wanted to depart further from the original, and create yet another version. This time, using the tone quality of the original sample as a starting point, we embarked on an analog-fueled journey into repetitive madness and harmonic bliss.

Because of this, dear readers, we can now present you with two separate tracks of the month.

Best, Señor B + Señor B

Well, it just so happens that I had heard of Steve Reich. I had also listened to some of his music. It’s not very nice though, just assuming that we didn’t know him. But two can play that game! Have you heard of Karlheinz Stockhausen? Why, of course you have! Here’s a link just in case 😉
But while we are on the subject of recommending music, I’d like to bring to your attention the band called motorbass, although I have a sneaking suspicion that you already know them. Anyway, just in case you don’t, here’s a really good one:

Pllease tell me the name of this song:

It’s a video where you played live in 2007 and the song starts at 0:28 (the sample lasts about 10 seconds):

Love you and keep posting on this journal. I love to read every entry, I really do.

  37. Daniel says:

I want to put this amazing remix on my video that I have made and upload it on youtube?

    Is it legal?
do I need any approval from you to do it?

    Thank you

  38. IcarusB says:

I saw that you’d posted this on Soundcloud a short while back too but didn’t listen to it all til now. I figured it was one to save for the early hours – and if my reaction is anything to go by I was right. It’s 2:30am and you’ve just provided me with 15mins of pure unadulterated bliss.

I recall The Orb using the same Reich segment on Little Fluffy Clouds many years ago. This reworking is so much better. You manage to embellish the repetition with so many beautiful layers.

What is it about your music? A music junkie I may be but there are very few musicians whose songs I return to so often. It’s the warmth of so much of your music – even the more melancholy tracks have a comforting aspect. It’s not just in the melodies – which in themselves are beautiful – but something to do with the delicious textures/sounds you choose. I can’t pinpoint it – but it’s Michelin star soul-food you peddle my friends!

I’ve used your music as a source of inspration for a home made Royksopp animation:

  50. Thezeppelin62 says:

Ah the wonderful Pat Metheny, Steve Reich, and Röyksopp. A better combination, I cannot think of. Loved the 2 mixes Señor’s!

  51. peppepop says:

Lovely, both Orb and Glass 😀

  52. Fuzzmaster101 says:

I prefer the Milde Salve because I like a remix to be quite different to the original but I have to commend you on the time it must have taken to sample all 140 bars of the original piece and edit them to be 4 beats in length for the original mix!

For the record I’ve always loved Steve Ryche’s original but the Milde Salve mix of this has gone straight into my top 10 favourite tracks of all time and I don’t think it’s going to move from there anytime soon. Great stuff. 😉

  53. Fuzzmaster101 says:

How embarassing, I’ve spelt his name as Ryche as in “Queensryche” when it should be Reich. Please arrange a public flogging of me 😉

  54. perrus says:
